Day 2 | Herve-Liège

The drink and the cheese and the noise of Herve gave us the necessary energy to cover the  remaining kilometres to Liège. The only obstacle: a few stray raindrops, causing us to put raincoats on. And off again after two minutes...
The entrance of Liège was quite impressive. First following 'la Meuse', and then a small detour to one of the architectural highlights from Liège: the railway station by Calatrava. We made some tours on the square before cycling to that other 'monument' of Liège: Georges Simenon: the Auberge Georges Simenon, in the rue Georges Simenon, close to a Simenon memorial. An appropriate sleeping place for librarians...
J'ai regretté que nous ne sommes pas arrêtés devant la gare de Liège pour discuter avec les gens, pour leur expliquer ce que nous faisons.

We had planned a stop in Herve to visit the 'Maison de tourisme', where we could taste some local beers and the famous cheese of Herve. Unfortunately, the shop was closed.
But there was an unexpected 'plan B''. Apparently there was a recording of a television programme,' Les Ambassadeurs', a touristic programme that focuses on the local specialties of the region. In this case, they would demonstrate a 'tir de camp', an old tradition dating back to 1500, carried out by a local guild, 'Les carilloneurs de Herve'. Other guilds were also present, all in colorful medieval costumes.
We were kindly invited to attend the recording as a' living public'. In exchange for some enthusiastic shouting and cheering we received a drink and some snacks. Our safety vests did not fit into the colour scheme, so we had to take them off.
After some rehearsals it was time for the spectacle. A row of small and bigger 'pétards' was set up on the square. They were connected by a trail of powder and then detonated one by one. Rather impressive! Yukka had asked us to make some noise along the way. Well, we did our best!

Nice to see also how the local people are really proud of their region and their local tradtions!

Well, this was quite a memorable ride!
When leaving Eupen, we drove past a garden where someone was cutting his hawthorn hedge. He called out a warning, but it was too late. A few hundred metres further on Emmanuel had a flat tyre. A long, strong and razorsharp thorn!
We didn't have the right size of inner tube and looked with slight bewilderment at a new model of inner tube that none of us, not even Rasmus (!) had seen before: a two-end tube. Not round, but a straight tube. Quite funny: standing in the middle of nowhere, looking at a tube with a beginning and an end and not exactly knowing what to do with it!

Over to plan B: the truck! Emmanuel and Frédéric would wait for the truck, Rasmus and Dirk would try to catch up with the group. As we were in the middle of an industrial zone, it was not that easy to find the right way. By trial and error we found the road to Clermont, without knowing if we were following the same route as the group. But is was rather nice to be able to cycle at a faster pace, through the beautiful countryside of of the Herve region!
In the end we arrived in Clermont at about the same time as the group, so we could immediately join them for lunch at the local party room, where we were welcomed by the mayor and the library team.

Day 2 | Medienzentrum Eupen

In a short introduction session for the whole group we watched an interesting promotion video about 'Ostbelgien', the German speaking part of Belgium. An excellent introduction for our international friends but also, let's admit it, for the Belgian participants.
After the introduction we could follow four 15' sessions about differnt aspects of the library. One of them focused on an intensive and unique collaboration project with school libraries (Schulmediotheken)

Reactions of the participants
  • We saw some good examples of how a public library attracts new visitors: the lending of board games, working with children on activities, etc.

Voor mij de eerste voorbeelden van hoe een openbare bibliotheek nieuwe bezoekers aantrekt: de uitleen van gezelschapsspelen, en werken met kinderen aan animaties e.d.

Rasmus immediately had some work to do: a flat and some technical problems!

While we were waiting for the briefing, Nathalie gave us some rather original warm-up exercises. We discovered that the movement you make
to quench a cigarette with your feet can also be used to warm you up!
Mariël briefed us about the programme – and then we sang our birthday canon for Vesa and Liesbeth, on the tune of Frère Jacques, accompanied by our bicycle bells.
Some of the participants thought it was a local birthday song. Anyway: a nice moment to start the day!
And yes: the sky was almost blue, no rain at all!

No need to ask for it! Everyone pitched in to bring the bikes up from the basement, Cycling for Libraries is about teamwork!
