The last evening of our tour. Belgian fries for everyone! Just great...
We also took time to congratulate every participant: for being there, for cycling with us, for their positive contributions to the success of the tour.

After Liège some 50 kilometres were waiting for us. We mostly followed the water: la Meuse, the canal Albert and the charming valley of the Geer, in the beautiful region of 'la Montagne Saint-Pierre.'
Most impressive was the landscape around Kanne, with the marl caves and the fortress of Eben-Emael.

Magnifique paysage avec des falaises !!!!!!!!!!
Merci beaucoup aux organisateurs pour avoir choisi ce chemin.

For the picnic we had chosen one of the more spectacular views of Liège:
les Coteaux de la Citadelle. Unfortunately also the moment for one of the few showers of the tour, at a rather inconvenient time. Luckily we found a little hiding place, offering us a beautiful view of Liège. And soon afterwards the sun was back, giving us an excellent excuse to taste some local beers on the terrace of Brasserie C! 'Curtius': a beer to remember!

The Youth Literature Centre of the City of Liege and the Text and Image Workshops asbl
This project became a reality in 2010, with the donation by Michel Defourny of an impressive collection of 35,000 books of youth literature to the city of Liège. At the same time, a structure "Les Ateliers du Texte et de l' Image" was set up. This non-profit organisation aims to boost and promote the collections.
Both the collection and the supporting structure found a home in the Bibliothèque Ulysse Capitaine, specialized in the preservation of the heritage archives of the history of the city.

The exhibition of José Parrondo that we saw in Thimister was designed in partnership with, among others, the Chiroux library and 'Les ateliers du texte et de l'image'

In the middle of a shopping area with popular brandstores you'll find this welcoming space for youngsters. It combines a medialibrary, a stage, a makerspace, workposts and a coffee bar.

Our impression: an i
nvigorating and innovating space continually looking to reinvent itself within the context they are working in. An inspiring media library embedded in society.

A special library! Six years ago, the collections of the ULG and a university college were brought together in one room. They each kept their own catalogue and lending system, among other things. They buy books with their own budgets. The barcodes are used by readers to find out at which desk they have to lend out a book.
A complex situation, which according to the staff present did not lead to problems or confusion.
It proved to be an interesting case study for one of the participants. Her university too is planning a Learning and Innovation Centre in collaboration with another university, working with a different library system and using a different access system.

Interesting to hear how they deal with open access and to get information about their digitisation projects.

As soon as something is digitised, the physical piece is only retrieved for research into its material aspects.
Els, who has “a great heart for old prints”, had a question about that. “Is it really necessary to protect documents that are in good condition and that are not frequently requested from users so strictly after digitisation? Do we not run the risk of a heritage library becoming a mere preservation library in the long term, whose existence is called into question by financiers? Because:' everything' that she possesses is digitized and can be consulted online (which of course also has advantages).”

Remarkable place with an impressive architecture.

This center is all about remembering the atrocities of Worldwar II and the prosecution of Jews and other minorities. The 'Bibliothèque George Orwell' has a collection about the hazards of fascism, the resistance and more contemporary topics. Using their historic archive they organize workshops, debates and exhibitions to advocate democratic citizenship and raise awareness against the rise of intolerance and the breach of civil liberties.  In doing so, they want to empower new generations in their citizenship and democratic values.
The building itself is a transformed public swimming pool. It also houses local media offices. The former basin on the top floor is now a platform for exhibitions and events. The new architecture respected the old bathing structures and created a sunlit grand space with a spectacular view of the city. A real discovery.

The introduction gave us an interesting look at the future. The plans for the new library were proudly presented. It will be much more than a library. Sounds very promising! We’ll surely return to take a look!

Workshop 1: Artothèque
In the ‘Artothèque’, two-dimensional works (photographs, engravings, etc.) by artists from Liège or with a bond with Liège are lent to readers for free. The library buys the works, so that the artists are paid for them.

The Artothèque is still somewhat hidden in the building, so the outreach range is less than the librarians would like. The plan is to give this collection more visibility in the new building.
Workshop 2 | Digital collections
"La bibliothèque numérique' a survey of digital ressources and services available for patrons: online education, streaming, e-book lending...
Intéressante idée : offrir aux chercheurs non seulement la publication en ligne de leurs travaux mais aussi la possibilité via la même application d'organiser ses travaux, leurs présentation, la bibliographie, etc.
Maya

Workshop 3 | Activities for children & adolescents - Youth library
Story telling in sign language, book fair for French and Belgian adolescent literature,...
Workshop 4 | Exchange session
Two dice and a list of triggering questions: a good way to start an exhange session.
et merci beaucoup pour les gâteaux :)
Maya
In my experience one of the first times library staff made sharing and exchange possible between staff and participants. Sadly not much time to enjoy the überfresh Tarte au riz and tarte au prunes!

MORE ABOUT THE LIBRARY NETWORK IN LIÈGE
A four-day bicycle tour from Trois-Ponts to Genk via Eupen, Liége and Tongeren. No less than 50 participants from 9 countries will thus visit the three linguistic communities Of Belgium.
We highlight the role of the libraries in our complex society.

Context
From 10th to 13th September 2017, tour organized by the Professional Association of Librarians, visiting Liége on 12th September.

Goal
Promoting the libraries, in order to make the services and resources of the libraries and their missions known, as well as the ways they modulate these missions. The project, created by librarians and people interested in libraries coming from the three linguistic communities of the country, aims at creating a dialogue between the communities and the different cultural policies.

Discovery of the "other"
The territory of Liége is covered by a dense and varied network of libraries, this network is composed of three operators: the Province of Liége, the Don Bosco Multimedia Centre and the City of Liege.

Presentation of the objectives and the priorities of the Public Reading Department of the City of Liége and of its partners, brought together in a common development plan, following the requirements of the new decree regarding the development of the reading practices. This decree aims at "promoting the access to knowledge and culture thanks to documentary and cultural resources on all kinds of media (tangible and intangible) and enabling their different uses by the greatest possible number of people".
Promoting the actions of mediation between the resources available in the libraries and the population, the development of meetings, of exchanges in order to integrate the individual reading practices into collective practices. Importance of relaxation, pleasure and creativity.
This development of the reading practices is implemented in the 13 libraries of the City (the 24 libraries of the network) and hinges on 5 priorities which support the cultural dynamics of the City of Liege.
  • Diversification of the reading practices
  • French language and integration
  • Digital mediation
  • Citizens' and socio-cultural participation
  • Opening and adaptations of the functioning of the reading services

Departments of the City of Liege and particularities:
Single area with the BUC which also welcomes the Workshops of Text and Image.

MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT FOR A NEW CULTURAL CENTRE
Picture
Cultural Development Centre
Presentation
At the initiative of Paul-Emile Mottard, Provincial Deputy-President, the Province of Liége introduced its project of cultural development centre at ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) within the framework of 'Liége en transition" (2014-2020) on 15th May 2014. This project, accepted in said programme, aims at the construction of a new building on the urban wasteland of the 'Baviére' triangle, in the 'Outremeuse' neighbourhood.
It is in the heart of this neighbourhood, regarded as marginalised, that the 'cultural development centre" of the future will open its doors in 2022. As a symbol of the dynamism of the Province of Liége as far as animation, cultural initiatives and innovation are concerned, the future building will propose a big space composed of a resource centre, a business incubator and a think tank. The whole will thus be a centre of a new kind.
The main goal of this centre hinges on the Writing and Digital themes, This common thread will orientate the activities in the centre and must be understood in the widest sense of the term: scenic, digital, graphic, visual writing(s). This will help to open up to the worlds of graphics, comic strips, literature, theatre, dance, performing arts, photography as well as design . and of course digital arts (gaming, videography). In terms of sectors: the world of cultural and creative industries including the Book-Press sector (publishing) will be the main targets.

Design
Under the coordination of André Denis, Provincial Deputy in charge of Construction and Infrastructures, a team of architects from the Building Department of the Province of Liége is now working on the elaboration of this 15 000 m2 low carbon building composed of a ground floor and 5 levels. The Department will follow the project until the end, which will be open to the public in 2022. The total amount of the realisation is estimated at 39 million euros (23,5 million paid by the ERDF).
The centre's design will notably rely on the concept of a third place to live: the first one being the family circle and the second one being the professional circle. The third circle is thus devoted to the social life. It refers to spaces where individuals can meet, get together and exchange in an informal way. This dimension is predominant for the creation of the centre whose layout and activity will be inspired by the new ways of working, of studying and of leisure activities in order to regard it as a pure and simple place of socialisation promoting the creative fulfilment: "This centre to be is thought as a tool elaborated to 'live together', promoting the access and the participation of all to Culture", Paul-Emile Mottard, Provincial Deputy-President says.
The different axes of this centre orientated towards citizens, companies, creative persons, the world of research and of education will make it a space of intergenerational convergence, of emulation and of socio-cultural diversity.
At least 1300 persons per day are expected. This will include the employees, the residents of the business incubator, the "adherents" or "residents" of the think tank, the partners and the public of the activities proposed night and day. This is thus an ambitious tool of attractiveness and of influence for the whole 'Outremeuse' area and well beyond.

MORE ABOUT THE DON BOSCO LIBRARIES
The Don Bosco Multimedia Centre and well established libraries in Liege
The Don Bosco Multimedia Centre and the public libraries that are linked to it have been very active in the Liége area since the 1980's. The Don Bosco MMC is one of the three elements (with the Chiroux Library and the Public Reading Department of the City of Liége) of the "Liége Local Network of Public Reading", which is the most important network in the French-speaking part of Belgium.
This network has elaborated a five-year development plan presenting different axes:
the collections' policy, the diversification of the media and of the reading practices;  the language regarded as a democratic and a cultural issue;  the digital mediation;  the citizens' and socio-cultural participation;  the adaptation of the services and the communication.
Hereunder, you will find the description of several actions that the Don Bosco MMC has implemented these last years in accordance with this five-year plan: video training course in partnership with the Chiroux Library, French as a foreign language classes, literacy teaching for adults, video games, art therapy workshops and creative expression workshops for children and teenagers.
Our own specificities are the multimedia, the ludic area and the "journey of writing".
The Prémontrés Library (Seminary) presents rich collections of historic (including incunabula) and religious books; the Amercoeur, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Lambert, Sainte-Walburge, Sainte-julienne and Robertmont Libraries complete the offer of the Don Bosco Multimedia Center.
The latter proposes to the people of Li&ge a Multimedia Animation Service, a game library, a labelled digital public space, a room devoted to the cinema, a public letter writer. Many different animations, exhibitions, meetings with writers... are organized.
We insist on the great diversity of publics for whom our actions are meant (children and teenagers, including out of school settings, elderly people, vulnerable persons and/or persons who are not used to reading, people who are unable to come to the library (e.g. hospital), associations...). We have more and more partners each year and they reinforce our presence and our actions in the life of our neighbourhoods, in a perspective of lifelong learning and citizen involvement.
