About me Ik ben heel graag onder de mensen. I just like to be among people. My job or my link with libraries Ik werk halftijds als bibliothecaris in de bibliotheek van Watermaal-Bosvoorde. I work as a part-time librarian in the library of Watermaal-Bosvoorde. Why do I think libraries are important? Een bibliotheek is een plaats van ontmoeting, een plaats om tot rust te komen, een plaats om je geest te verruimen, een plaats om te ontspannen, een plaats waar iedereen zich zou moeten thuis voelen. A library is a place of meeting, a place to relax, a place to expand your mind, a place to relax, a place where everyone should feel at home. My challenge or focus Ontmoeting! Meeting people! About me O describe myself in one sentence: " I want to ride my bicycle". My job I work in the public library of Malmedy, a peaceful town in the east of Belgium. Why do I think libraries are important? For me, library means window on the world and social inclusion. I believe in the power of books (or games and computers) but we need of a mediation (especially by us - the librarians). It's a breath of life. My challenge I often ride my bicycle with friends and we like to climb little mountains. My "Cycling For Libraries" challenge is different: I want to discover many ways of thinking the world and the library. So, I'm looking forward to share with you about libraries and other discussion topics...on the bike ;) About me I`m 37-years-old mostly optimistic father of three children. My job or my link with libraries I am a library director and I work at the Joensuu branch libraries. Why do I think libraries are important? I believe that the importance of libraries can be found from their call for equality among people. Life is sometimes unequal, but library welcomes everyone. For me, this is the main reason why I want to work in the library. I believe that libraries increases good in the world. My challenge or focus Cycling for libraries is an event in which I have wanted to take part for a long time. This is my first tour and I think that it´s great to be able to see how this kind of happening is organized. I also think that this is an opportunity to learn again something new from our occupation. Most of all I am looking forward to meet and connect with cycling colleagues from many countries This is where I work: Joensuun seutukirjasto About me
My name is Pauline. I'm an enthusiastic person. It will be my first "Cycling for libraries" and I'm really excited to meet you all ! My job I coordinate the team in a public library in Brussels. Why do I think libraries are important? The importance of librariesLibraries are essential in a democracy. It's a place where people can meet, debate, find informations, rest, dream, ... They are like bubbles of freedom in a world where everything go so fast. My challenge or focus Two issues are important for me at the moment : the mixity of publics in the library (how to mix different public, how to make live side by side different people and need in the same place - difficult especially with the young people). About me I am director emeritus of the Ghent public library; during the last period of my career I was responsible for the planning of a new central library, called the Krook, which opened tot he public in March 2017. My job or my link with libraries I am now retired Why do I think libraries are important? Public libraries are amongst the last non-commercial havens, open to everybody and irreplaceable promoters of reading and lifelong learning. My challenge or focus I think that libraries can no longer limit themselves to just providing access to their collection. They should also focus on their broader cultural and educational impact. I am therefore particularly interested to learn how various libraries cope with this challenge. This is where I (used to) work: Openbare Bibliotheek Gent
About me We (me and my wife + our cat Eetu) are living in Espoo city (south coast, near Helsinki). I like reading, sometimes writing too, wander in forests, trying to find delicious mushrooms and blueberries (we have a lot of blueberries in our forests), cycling too of course. I appreciate progressive co-operation and to chat & discuss with different kind of people. My motto is ”If you fall, stand up!" My job or my link with libraries I have been working a lot in the municipal Libraries. During the last 3 years I have been working in Library´s Makerspace. It´s wonderful to see how the customers and the members of staff learn together there, creating something new at the same time. Why do I think libraries are important? Libraries help to make it possible. We offer the space to the customers, knowledge sharing, getting new ideas … Libraries really have a positive role in the world. My challenge or focus My library, Espoo City Library, promotes democracy, free sharing of Information, learning together, co-operation and independence by working together with the asylum seekers. The main goal is help them assimilate to the society. My goal during our cycling tour is to learn how the libraries around the world promote co-operation, independence, courage, democracy and free sharing of information. I will try and ask you during our tour about how these issues are present in your work. Thank you already in advance! This is where I work: Espoo city Library Describe yourself in one sentence
I love meeting people My job or my link with libraries Adult librarian in charge of purchasing books in fields as computer, sciences, law, health, cooking and gardening Why do I think libraries are important? Libraries are important to offer to the public a place where a large amount of digital and printed resources is offered, also training that can help oneself to be updated in knowledge, and a meeting place for the seasonal cultural programme and just the freedom to be indoors without any of these purposes. My challenge or focus Documents in sciences are less borrowed than other fields, I question myself about if it has to do with attractiveness of the area, the subject itself, a need of mediation About me
I am 43 years old and an adult life-long librarian. I guess it's more a hobby than work, a serious one that is, like gardening. Or cycling... My job At this moment, I work as a part time librarian in the very small village of Waasmunster. In a library of this scale you literally have to do everything, not a bit but a lot. And that's very fine with me! Why do I think libraries are important? Libraries are not just important, they are bare necessities for democratic, culturally advanced societies. And if needed, I will argument this endlessly from bicycle to bicycle during C4L! My challenge Avoiding potholes. Reading while cycling. Keeping whatever focus. My job or my link with libraries
